Jaś is the 11-month-old son of a Belarusian mother and Polish father. Suffering from mucoviscidosis, Jaś was abandoned by his mother who claimed to lack the financial resources to bring up and treat the boy. A foster family was taking care of him when the Belarusian government claimed rights to the child. Minsk declared that Jaś is a Belarusian citizen and therefore, should return to his homeland. However, Polish doctors warned the authorities that the return od Jaś to Belarus might cause deterioration of his health. Yesterday, the father of Jaś decided to recognize his son. The man (a Polish citizen) was pointed out by the boy’s mother. If DNA tests and governmental officials confirm the paternity, Jaś will obtain Polish citizenship and will not return to Belarus. His father wants to relinquish parental rights because he is not able to assure treatment for mucoviscidosis.
