New UN sanctions on Iran

Special regulations have been put on Iran after its refusal to cease its military production program. None of the members of the Security Council voted against the sanctions, although Indonesia withdrew from the vote. The new resolution [1803] envisages further restrictions towards Iranian policy. Iranian VIPs are not allowed to travel, and the country’s assets are said to have been blocked. Russia’s eventual approval of the resolution had been agreed in January. Putin put forward Russia’s conditions to meet the agreement only if the EU would hold back with the decision during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assembly in Vienna. All permanent members of the UN Security Council gigned the agreement on 22 January. Voting has been postponed due to recent diplomatic operations. Considering the outcome of voting in 2006 and 2007, France, Germany and Great Britain expected unanimous results for the resolution. The United States and its allies suspect Iran of attempting to construct an atom bomb. Teheran authorities deny this, emphasizing the civilian nature of its works. Iran has ignored all hitherto prevailing resolutions adopted by the UN concerning its nuclear program.
