Polish-American Friendship?

Can we count on friendship with the US? After today’s meeting between Polish PM Donald Tusk and US President George W. Bush and the following press conference, it may be appear to be so. First of all, Mr Bush expressed his gratitude for Poland’s sacrifice and dedication in restoring democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also promised that before his term ends he will have put forward a scheme to help modernise the Polish Army. Furthermore, when asked about the visa requirement for Polish immigrants, he replied that he understands Poland’s dissatisfaction with the pace of implementing the essential changes in law. However, PM Tusk is aware that in order to finalise the talks successfully, each party should give one another time for serious negotiation, but with the best intentions. He also emphasised that the subject of the talks was the anti-missile shield and he was content that Mr Bush understands Poland’s stance in this matter. In regard to this issue, both parties raised the question of global security, in which, as they both agreed, a common position is crucial. PM Tusk confessed that the US President’s promise of help and support regarding any threat to Poland “instills us with a feeling of optimism”. He concluded that the talks were friendly and open, but firm and resolute, and that he is very optimistic with regard to Polish-American relations. Let us hope his optimism will be realised in when it comes to facts and decisions.
