No More Uniforms?

Today in the Polish Sejm (Parliament) MPs will be discussing a bill which is meant to amend the law concerning the educational system in Poland. Civic Platform (PO) and Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) MPs want to abolish the law according to which pupils (in primary, middle schools, and schools for adults) are obliged to wear uniforms. According to the bill put forward by PO a headmaster will be allowed to impose the duty to wear uniforms, provided that it is accepted by the Board of Teachers and the Board of Parents. Nonetheless, if the bill is passed it will also introduce a new regulation according to which pupils who do badly in the “behaviour assessment” (get a grade lower than 4) will not receive scholarships. The Ombudsman of school children has reminded us that such an idea resembles Roman Giertych’s “Zero Tolerance” campaign.
