Human Rights Watch, the New York-based organization which defends human rights worldwide, has criticized President Lech Kaczyński for statements and actions described as homophobic. Similarly to the President of Uganda Yoweri Museweni and British Home Office (the Ministry of Internal Affairs), the President of Poland was introduced intto the Hall of Shame. HRW claimed that President Lech Kaczyński was condemned for denying respect for families. The organization has also been dealing with the Kaczyński’s speech concerning ratifying the European Union Reform Treaty, in which President used pictures of the marriage of ‘American gays’ Brendan Fay and Thomas Moulton, to alert people to the danger of legalizing homosexual marriages.
According to the HRW report, Kaczyński and his allies, including his brother, the former Prime Minister, have campaigned for years to deny basic rights to lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals in Poland. The President of Uganda was criticized for police actions persecuting homosexuals, and for the statement of a minister, who said that homosexuality is unnatural. The British Home Office was condemned for denying asylum to immigrants who claim that in their countries they are persecuted for their homosexuality. HRW gives the example of an Iranian gay man who was threatened with deportation from the United Kingdom in 2007, although in Iran gay people can face torture or even the death penalty. The American organization does not mention whether the gay man was finally deported or not.
