Polish Humour

“How could he?!”, wonder German people visiting Berlin zoo to see its major attraction. They could not believe their eyes, when they saw the red and white flag with the inscription “Ich bin fur Polen” (I’m for Poland) hanging over the paddock of their beloved polar bear. Their frustration is understandable: they love Knut so much that the bear has almost became a national symbol. The bear was born in Berlin zoo in December 2006. Soon after its birth, the bear’s mother rejected Knut. Thus, the employees of the zoo decided to feed the baby bear by means of a milk bottle. This in turn triggered the response of animal rights defenders, who claimed that having been rejected by its mother, Knut would not survive in the natural environment, and thus should be put to sleep. Luckily, friends of the bear won people over and by now over a million of people have had the possibility to see Knut in Berlin zoo. Additionally, the bear became a major figure of German showbiz: it stars in movies, ads, and even has its own bodyguards. So when five days before the Poland-Germany European Cup game, the bear announced its support for Poland, the German people were stunned. Why did Knut decide to support the Polish team? It turned out to be a joke: the red and white flag was put there by Polish football fans.
