June 4th marks the nineteenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing. Nongovernmental organisations have appealed to the Polish government to take a definite stance on human rights violations in China. On June 4th, 1989 the Chinese army, with the use of tanks and machine guns, dispersed a peaceful demonstration held by students who had occupied Tiananmen Square in Beijing for three weeks demanding democratic reform. Thousands of people were killed, injured or arrested. With regard to the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, several nongovernmental organisations addressed an open letter to the Polish PM Donald Tusk recalling that when China bid for the Olympic Games in 2001 they promised to: ease censorship; provide the media with complete freedom; stop repression against national minorities; lower the number of death sentences and executions. Yesterday, from 5pm a demonstration, other happenings, and an all-night vigil was held in front of the Chinese Embassy in Warsaw.
