Former Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński decided to add fuel to the flames by praising the book that accuses Lech Wałęsa of being an agent of the Security Services (SB) in the years 1970-1976. During one of his weekly spots on national radio Kaczyński commented on the book written by the historians of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) published recently. In 1990 Jarosław and his brother forced through Wałęsa’s nomination for the presidency and after the election was won Jarosław became head of the Presidential Chancellery. A year later there was a conflict between Wałęsa and the Kaczyński brothers. They claimed Wałęsa did not keep his promises from the time of the elections i.e so-called de-communization. On October 1991 the President dismissed the two brothers and from that day there has been ongoing conflict between them. The controversy over the IPN book is yet another chapter in that story.
Jarosław Kaczyński stated yesterday that while he was the head of the Presidential Chancellery in 1990 Andrzej Milczanowski who was head of the Office for State Protection (UOP) at that time showed him documents of the communist secret services proving Wałęsa was a communist agent. “The documents presented to me were genuine and graphologically verified,” said Kaczyński on radio. “It was a file on an agent called ‘Bolek’, it was Wałęsa, actually it was just a single document. It related to the events at the shipyard in Gdańsk after the first all-out strikes at the end of December 1970 and January 1971. It was a clear description containing names, it had many pages. It was about some commotion at the shipyard, the organized meetings of hundreds of people. When I pointed out that Wałęsa could not have written it because the text is too cohesive, and grammatical, and on top of that comprehensible, Milczanowski explained that the reason for it is that Wałęsa told the officer of SB everything and later the man dictated it back to Wałęsa”. Wałęsa was yesterday asked to comment on the Kaczyński revelations and said that the PiS leader is mentally unstable if he saw genuine incriminating letters of ‘Bolek’ from Milczanowski. Milczanowki denies he said anything in relation to Wałęsa being an agent and does not remember any discussion with Kaczyński about ‘Bolek’ and Wałęsa.

Thanks for this. I don´t know much about Polish history, I do know something about your courage and cultural resistance. About Walesa I admire him and if somebody wants to find imperfections in one´s past life there´s no one without a stain, even if what Kaczyński says might be true. There are lots of cases in Slovenia (my fatherland) of people who first joined “partizan´” units and when they realized their true objectives and totalitarian feelings they left as soon as they could.
