Poland’s national team played a lot worse than Croatia but one thing is certain – the Polish footballers had better hairdcuts. Goalkeeper Vedran Runje, for example, scared the living daylight out of football fans with his unfashionable haircut and ponytail. The other Croatian players should also go to a hairdresser because their hair was either too long, matted or they had ridiculous sideburns. However, this might be due to the effort they put into playing football. The Polish football players did not bother about the game because, perhaps, fashion and style were more important for them.
Haircuts are an important element of football and no professional group has contributed more to the development of hairdressing than footballers. It is worth mentioning the football players from East Germany who had hair which was “short at the front, long at the back,” as in the now infamous song by Kazik Staszewski. David Beckham has also unquestionably contributed greatly to fashion and beauty. Covers of various magazine and even a doctoral thesis have been devoted to his famous punk hairstyle. This year’s poll for the most handsome footballer (carried out in a few countries by LG) was won by Cristiano Ronaldo and as far as haircuts are concerned, he has also managed to achieve something. His haircut is inspired by the mod subculture of the 1950s and the musical Grease making this retro style popular again. It is clear that attachment to fashionable hairstyles was always a part of the sport at the very highest level. Maybe, until the time Poland play Croatia…
