The Ministry of Finance has exchanged EU funds for Polish złoty in an effort to safeguard Poland’s currency. Yesterday Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk mentioned such a move, but was not supposed to execute this until the euro reached a value of PLN 5. Dziennik discovered that the Ministry of Finance is already examining the possibility of repeating this transaction. The whole operation is shrouded in mystery. The Ministry refused to reveal to Dziennik any details, such as when the euro was sold, the exchange rate, and the exact amount in question. It seems the Ministry is currently analysing the impact of today’s sale, and is not excluding the idea of selling euro once again. Economists on the whole are of the opinion that the government should not intervene on the currency market. “The PM’s declaration concerning the intervention on the currency market will lead to even greater attacks from speculators on the złoty,” says Robert Gwiazdowski, an economist at the Adam Smith Centre.
