Saving Lives
In Śląsk Cieszyński (southern Poland) bartenders will be giving away free reflective armbands to their customers. Police came up with the idea and the breweries are supporting it. The idea is that thanks to armbands fewer pedestrians will get hit on the roads. Last year in Śląsk Cieszyński as many as 15 pedestrians were killed by cars. Police say that in most cases the victims were wearing dark clothes while walking down unlit roads near a pub. Most often it seems that the pedestrians were intoxicated. According to the police persons wearing reflective armbands can be seen by drivers from over 200 metres away. This distance gives the driver more time to respond. Three breweries have offered to sponsor the free armbands campaign. Local communities are also interested in the campaign and want to contribute. The armbands will be distributed in selected pubs and restaurants; bartenders will decide who should be given the armbands because they are most familiar with the customers and know who is going home on foot. The organisers of the campaign hope that people will wear reflective armbands and even make it trendy to do so.
