Senate Anniversary
Today’s session of the Senate marks the 20th anniversary of the restoration of the upper chamber. On this occasion, all senators who ever sat in the Polish Senate received invitations to the ceremony, including Aleksander Gawronik and Henry Stokłosa. The guest list also included Ryszard Kaczorowski, the last Polish emigré President, and former Polish Presidents Lech Wałęsa and Aleksander Kwaśniewski. Controversy arose over the presence of Gawronik and Stokłosa. The former was released from prison in May this year after having been convicted of being a part of an organised crime group. The latter is accused of corruption. The Speaker of the Senate Bogdan Borusewicz said: “Both men were chosen by the inhabitants of Greater Poland, so if there is any resentment, I’m not the one to blame”. He also suggested that it would be better if Gawronik and Stokłosa did not accept their invitations.
