According to Portuguese and other international media, and despite negative publicity, the atmosphere accompanying Euro 2102 seems to be extremely friendly. Despite yesterday’s ugly scenes in Warsaw, foreign hooligans (rather than home-grown ones) seem to be causing the main problems. Record, Portugal’s most famous sports magazine, noted that Sunday’s scuffles between Croatian and Irish football fans ruined the whole event for many who made the journey to Poznań. It appeared that hooligans from both countries decided to confront each other even before the match started. Unfortunately, this had absolutely nothing to do with real sport. When summing up the first several days of Euro 2012, SIC Noticias mentioned the aggressive attitude of Russian fans toward security guards who were attacked in the Wrocław stadium, and as a result had to be taken to hospital. However, this incident was not the only one which drew international media attention. Other than the fighting in Warsaw, the Lisbon media reported, long before the start of the game between Russia and the Czech Republic, that Russian supporters had decided to stir up trouble in one of Wrocław’s local bars. They were stopped by the police. However, as well as Russian fans, a small section of German fans caused embarrassment to themselves, when in Lvov, they were caught singing racist songs, setting fire to stadium seats, as well as making monkey chants every time Nani, the Portuguese football player born in Africa, had the ball.

There was no scuffle between the irish and croatian fans. But polish fans that attacked them!
Welcome, welcome Johnster! I have it from a reliable source that the Croatians began laying into the Irish, so they, of course, fought back.
The croats and the irish had a great time together. Some polish fans attacked the bad blue boys fans and some irish were there too and got hurt. “Great Source” you have.
Yes, they DID have a good time but there were several arrests made – Croatian and Irish. Not wanting to look at statistics but I think you’ll find more Croatian and Irish fans were arrested than Polish fans.
Wrong again buddy. 1 Irish, 3 croats and 10 polish fans. I understand that you are angry at the foreign media for calling the polish fans racist and so on. There is no need for that. Racism is everywhere. In England and France too. And I understand the rivalry with Russia because of the politics and history. But the fans that attacked Croatian and Irish fans (both catholics) were just hooligans looking for trouble. I have been to Poland and it is a beautiful country with some amazing people. But everywhere there are some people that are just looking for violence. Take care
.
Then I stand corrected. I was led to believe (much as I love Croatians and Croatia) that the Croats started the fight (they threw a fire cracker onto the pitch during the game) and attacked the Irish.
Racism and hooliganism are two equally abominable demons, and although often caused by similar phenomena, they are different.
