New Fourth Commandment

Loosening His Grip?

Loosening His Grip?

The Polish episcopate has changed the Fourth Commandment of the Church and limited the formal prohibition of merriment to Good Friday. This means that if someone would like to party on Friday, he or she will be able to do so without breaking the fourth commandment. The previous wording of the commandment was: “Maintain prohibited fasts and abstinence from meals that contain meat and do not take part in merriment on Fridays”. The newly adopted wording of the commandment is: “Maintain prohibited fasts and abstinence from meals that contain meat and do not take part in merriment on Good Friday”. Małopolska Bishop Wiesław Lechowicz said, “We still encourage the respect of the penitential character of Fridays. However, the fact that there is no direct mention of merriment on Fridays means only that if someone parties on Friday (not including Good Friday), he or she is not committing a sin”.
