Polish Pensioners Perturbed

Enough to Survive?

Enough to Survive?

Minister of Labour Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz shocked Polish senior citizens at the beginning of the New Year when he announced his new idea for the calculating the annual rise in state pensions. Although he has not disclosed any details, journalists have calculated the effects of the change and it seems many pensioners will lose out. Currently, all pensions are index-linked and also take into account the 20% increase in average salaries from the previous year. Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz came up with the idea that wealthier senior citizens’ pensions will only be index-linked. The revolutionary idea of the Labour Ministry has spared only the poorest pensioners. Currently, the poorest senior citizens in Poland receive PLN 831 gross. The others will surely lose out and it means that someone with a pension of PLN 1200 will receive an increase of PLN 23 instead of PLN 25.
