Meteoric Gold

Speed skater Zbigniew Brodka and ski jumper Kamil Stoch received Olympic gold medals containing a fragment of the meteorite that hit Chelyabinsk a year ago on 15 February 2013. The idea to place fragments of meteorite in the Olympic medals was put forward by the Chelyabinsk local authorities who wanted to remind the world about last year’s incredible cosmic event. As a result of the meteor shower over the Urals and its surroundings, more than a thousand people were injured. The estimated financial losses were at least one billion rubles (about $33m). Chelyabinsk suffered the greatest damage with 300 buildings, including hospitals, a nursery, schools as well as sport facilities being destroyed or seriously damaged.
