The well-known Polish senator and Solidarity activist Zbigniew Romaszewski has died. “It is difficult to talk about current events without mentioning him,” says Joanna Lichocka. “We worked together for almost forty years, often in dangerous situations during communist times in the seventies and eighties. Moreover, our work with the needy, persecuted and poor brought us together as well as the fight for an independent Poland. That is how we met Zbyszek in 1976 while helping persecuted workers from Ursus, Radom and Grudziądz. Hardly anybody remembers the fact that Mr and Mrs Romanszewski were the first to help people during the most difficult times for the anti-communist opposition. The beginnings of the opposition were unbelievably difficult because we knew that we were completely alone, apart from the support we had from a small group of lawyers: Jan Olszewski, Witold Lis-Olszewski, Andrzej Grabiński and Stanisław Szczuka.”
