No Love Lost Between Lions

Lion Love

Two female Asian lions have been artificially inseminated in Łódź Zoo. Workers in the zoo decided to act because they could not wait any longer. There was no chance for a natural conception because the male lion had ‘low libido’. The artificial insemination procedure was divided into two stages. Firstly, the zoo staff and experts obtained semen from the male and then impregnated the females with it, who had been given hormone therapy beforehand. “We will have to wait for the results of our work about four months,” says Maria Kaczmarska of the Office of Green City in Łódź. Asian lions are an extremely rare species and Łódź Zoo decided on artificial insemination because 5-year-old male Maximus was not interested in the two lionesses 8-year-old Tyc and 5-year-old Chaya. Łódź is the only Polish zoo that can boast three Asian lions. Their natural habitat is a national park in north-western India, where there are approximately 300 of these predators. Asian lions are slightly smaller than African lions. It is estimated that in all zoos around the world there are 100 Asian lions, of which about 70 are in Europe.
