On the eve of the canonization of John Paul II, the Italian media have made all manner of mistakes regarding the surname of the Polish Pope: Wojtyła. In press agencies, newspapers and on websites his surname appears spelt in numerous ways. Wojtila, Woytila, Woitila are the most common mistakes that can be found in even the most widely read Italian newspapers and websites in articles preceding the double Pope canonization ceremony in the Vatican on 27 April. The surname of the Polish Pope constitutes such a challenge that in one text on John Paul II (the former Karol Wojtyła) there are two incorrect versions of his surname. What is surprising is the fact that these mistakes are not only made by Italian Vaticanists but other ‘experts’ around the world.
