Wrocław has set a new Guinness world record. On 1 May, Wrocław once again proved that the city is the guitar capital of the world. The annual Thanks Jimi Festival set a new record for the largest guitar ensemble in the world. The record was achieved thanks to 7,344 Polish and foreign guitarists (including acoustic, classical, electric and bass guitars) who gathered at Wrocław Market Square for a collaborative guitar performance of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe”. The Thanks Jimi Festival is not only about breaking records, it is also a concert performed by rock musicians from around the world. This year Steve Vai one of the best guitarists of all time; Animals legend Eric Burdon; Michael Angelo Batio, who is regarded as the world’s fastest guitarist and Chris Jagger, brother of Rolling Stones’ Mick, appeared on stage. Many Polish artists also took part, including Wojciech Waglewski (Voo Voo); Sebastian Riedel (Cree); bassist Wojciech Pilichowski and Arka Noego. This year, with help from Eric Burdon, the gathered guitarists also played the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” and created the world’s greatest guitar orchestra. “I expected us to break the record but I’m so glad that the rain didn’t even stop us,” says musician Leszek Cichoński, organiser of the event. “I would like to thank everyone who came to Wrocław Market Square. My heart was in my mouth when I saw all the guitarists raise their guitars in the air,” adds the musician.
