The Polish Ministry of Finance wants supervisory board members of banks to speak Polish. Employees in such positions are often foreigners, which means that if new regulations come into force they might lose their jobs. As Dziennik Gazeta Prawna writes, admin staff in the largest banks in Poland are chiefly Polish speakers. However, in the majority of supervisory boards, people with a command of the Polish language make up only approximately 50% of all board members. What is more, there are some boards whose members do not speak Polish at all. It is claimed that the new rules are harmonised with EU standards. Wiesława Dróżdż, a ministry spokesperson, has assured the banking sector that the amendment can still be changed before it becomes law.
