Problems for Mayor

Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the mayor of Warsaw, has admitted that recent delays and difficulties in the running of the Warsaw subway are probably a result of deliberate action taken by a single person or group of people. At the same time, the Warsaw authorities ensure inhabitants of the Polish capital that the metro is safe and there will soon be additional policing. Part of the Warsaw subway was not in operation because gas could be smelt in certain tunnels connecting some stations. Most recently, six stations were not in operation and the subway stopped working between the Słodowiec and Politechnika stations. Fire-fighters from the Chemical Rescue Unit, however, found no gas leak. Also, the police did not find anything that could explain the smell. After a meeting of the Crisis Management Team, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz told journalists that the most likely reason was that “a person or group of people deposited the odour there on purpose.” The Mayor of Warsaw assured journalists that the subway is safe and municipal services will locate the trouble maker (or makers). There will also be more patrols by the police, municipal security and metro services. The police are now looking at CCTV footage.
