The mayor of Kraków Jacek Majchrowski has announced that the city will not be bidding to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The city council will now inform its partners about the results of the referendum which preceded the decision. In the referendum, the people of Kraków voted against the plans to organise the 2022 Games. “We need to complete the work that has already been started as well as sum up the whole project”, said the mayor. He also claimed that according to reliable opinion polls, there were many supporters of the Olympic Games to begin with. According to Majchrowski, “the Kraków 2022 Bid Committee, headed by Jagna Marczułajtis-Walczak, has lost the trust of the people and there was not enough time to rebuild this trust.” Majchrowski stated that the people of Kraków showed in the referendum that the city believes in democracy. He emphasised that Kraków had the highest voter turnout in Poland in the European Parliament elections as well as an impressive turnout in the local referendum. “This proves that the people of Kraków care about their city and that they want to decide about what happens here. It’s just a pity that the results of the referendum shattered Kraków’s and the province’s dreams of realising such an amazing project. The Winter Games could have played an extremely important role in the development of the whole region,” Majchrowski added.
