Russian Supplies Turned Off?

Janusz Piechociński, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy, recently told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) that the threat of Russia turning off gas supplies is still very real and that the economic crisis is a perfect opportunity for the restructuring of the European gas market. Piechociński participated in a Polish-German Energy Summit organised in Berlin by Polish employers and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). Włodzimierz Karpiński, Polish Minister of Treasury, also participated in the meeting. Piechociński told FAZ the fact that Central and Eastern European states are so dependent on Russian gas undermines their negotiating position and leads to increased prices of gas. The Minister explained that the plan to create a European energy union, supported by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, aims to integrate the purchase of gas and gas policies in general, which will lead to a decrease in gas prices. “The price of gas is far too high compared to its real value,” he claimed. “The gas market is poorly organised, which means the EU loses billions every year. The agreements are usually unclear and contain confidential stipulations, which make all principles of fair competition irrelevant,” he added. The participants of the Polish-German Energy Summit also discussed energy security and the European internal market for energy.
