Artur Ruciński was swimming in a pool, relaxing with his family, when the call came. The singer was invited to stand in for Plácido Domingo who had to cancel his performance at the Salzburg Festival in Austria due to illness. “I had twenty minutes to pack. I hurried to the airport in Warsaw and in the evening I had a short meeting with the director’s assistant,” said Ruciński in an interview for TVN. The following day, after a quick rehearsal, he appeared in Alvis Hermanis’ staging of “Il trovatore” (The Troubadour) by Giuseppe Verdi. Ruciński performed alongside renowned Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. Although the two have met before, it was the first time they had a chance to work together. The performance was a great success with the Polish baritone receiving a standing ovation. “I have been present on world stages for the past six years. Also the fact that I have been invited as a last minute replacement for Plácido Domingo is a result of my work in recent years,” said Ruciński. He added that as far as his career is concerned this year has been particularly good: “After the success in Salzburg, new invitations keep coming and I have been very busy indeed.”
