On 15 April police finally found Maja, a 10-year-old girl from Wołczków near Szczecin. The young girl disappeared without a trace on her way home after school. At 4.30 p.m. she got off the bus and this was the last time she was seen. The police established the suspect’s identity after his car was captured by a speed camera. The trail was picked up near the Polish-German border: the girl’s uncle recognised her shoe left on the street. For the first time ever in Poland, the new Child Alert procedure was used to find the missing girl and by recreating her last steps Polish officers together with the help of German police successfuly tracked the car which belonged to a woman who lent it to her cousin. It appeared that another man took the car in which the girl was later found near a highway in Friedland. Thankfully, Maja was found uninjured and in good health. The Polish Prosecutor’s office is trying to extradite the suspect to Poland as it was revealed that in the past he was sentenced for kidnapping a 9-year-old child in Great Britain.
