In the course of one year, the number of teachers in Poland has fallen by 2,200. What is more, in the last four years, the number of academics in Poland has decreased by 5,000 people. This new trend is due to the difficult situation in Poland’s universities, according to a report prepared by Professor Jerzy Wilkin on behalf of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP).The conclusions of the report are being discussed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The demographic drop (in the number of students) that is set to continue until the end of this decade, was supposed to be an opportunity for universities to improve the quality of education in Poland. “The decrease in the number of students in higher education institutions should be used to increase the role of active forms of education and reduce the number of students in groups, and allow academics to become more involved in scientific research,” says Professor Jerzy Wilkin.
