Capital Boom

Capital Boom

According to a report prepared by real estate agents Szybko.pl, Metrohouse and Expander, prices on the secondary real estate market in June in the 15 largest Polish cities dropped by 1.6% YOY. Compared to May, they grew by 0.1%. It is predicated that Poles can expect a boom on this market in the coming months. Marta Kosińska, a Szybko.pl real estate market expert, believes that it will be caused the typical increased activity of realty buyers and renters during the autumn, as well as changes in regulations and more MdMs (Apartments for Young Adults). In almost all cities in which markets have been analysed (except Wrocław), average transaction prices dropped slightly when compared to the previous month’s prices. The most significant fall in prices has been observed in Gdynia and Gdańsk. The most noticeable difference between offered prices and transaction prices was observed in Krakow (a difference of 8%), whereas in Warsaw, offered prices are 2% higher than the prices at which the properties are eventually bought.

First Private University in Poland

First Private University

First Private University

In Poland, for an educational institution to be called a university, the institution needs to have the right to award PhDs in at least six disciplines. The central commission which grants these rights takes into consideration factors such as lecturers’ scholarly achievements and the number of professors and doctors employed by a given institution. Until recently, there were four universities in Warsaw. Now, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (SWPS) will join the group, becoming the first private university in Poland. According to Ewa Trzebińska, vice-rector for academic affairs, this evidences the high quality of the educational services provided by the institution. She also hopes that the new status of the school will be both a source of satisfaction and motivation for students, as it will increase the credibility of their diplomas in the eyes of any future employers. SWPS was established in 1996. Lectures were conducted in a high school in Warsaw until, at the beginning of the previous decade, SWPS moved into its own building in the Praga district of Warsaw. Initially, SWPS offered exclusively courses in social psychology; however, over time, the range if studies was broadened and new campuses were established in Wrocław, Poznań, Katowice and Sopot.

Bee Hotels

Helping Bees

Helping Bees

The Mokotów district in Warsaw has begun installing tree hotels for bees, as part of the Little Houses for Our Winged Friends with Stripes project. Forty-eight such houses are already in place. The remaining one hundred are to join them soon. The main purpose of the 30-centimetre-high structures is to give shelter to various insects, including bees, butterflies, and beetles. Since the houses are a new addition to local parks, each structure includes a small plate informing residents why the houses have been put up and what their function is. The plates are not permanently fixed to trees, so as not to damage the trunks unnecessarily, and will be removed once people get used to the idea. The hotels are primarily meant to help increase the number of beneficial insects in the vicinity and prevent them from disappearing; however, this is not their only purpose. If the project proves successful, the number of plants that are pollinated and bear fruit will rise, increasing the amount of food available not only to various insects but also to other animals living in the city, including birds.

Warsaw's CeDeT

Warsaw’s CeDeT

At the corner of Bracka Street in Warsaw, Doraco has begun expansion of the former Central Department Store (CDT). The famous building which once housed children’s store Smyk, will still have six floors, but the building’s standards will be raised and office space will be increased. According to the investor, the quality of the property will fulfil BREEAM Certificate requirements (system of quality assessment of buildings in relation to the quality of the indoor environment, energy efficiency, the availability of public transport, building materials, building operations management, water and waste management). The expansion of CDT was designed according to the guidelines of Warsaw’s conservator so that the building will fit into the architecture of Warsaw’s centre. According to Andżelika Cieślowska, chairperson of Doraco, social issues have had a huge impact on the project. The company is taking care to minimise any resulting difficulties like additional traffic or noise. She claims that the company will do its best to make the expansion and renovation of CDT as easy for residents and commuters as possible. It is planned to be finish in the third quarter of 2017.

Wilanów Squirrel Yarn

Red Squirrel

Red Squirrel

For squirrels the most important thing in life are nuts. However, in Wilanów (a district of Warsaw), a TVN24 reporter noticed a squirrel holding a ball of yarn in its paws. When it realised it was being watched, it tried to hide its trove in a tree hollow. The reporter said, “I saw something strange happening and went out to take a photo”. The ball of yarn was caught in a hole next to the hollow and the squirrel was unable to hide it there. According to reporter, there are plenty of red squirrels in Wilanów but it was the first time he had seen a squirrel hiding a ball of yarn. Andrzej Miozga, head of the “Little Mammals” section of Wrocław Zoo states that squirrels often behave this way when they have kits. He confirmed this by the fact that in Wrocław Zoo there are squirrels which like to hide bird quills, lace and sticks: “All that is soft serves to cushion the squirrel nest”.
