Golden Train Found?

Nazi Gold?

Nazi Gold?

Treasure hunters from all over the country are rushing to Wałbrzych to look for the long-lost “golden train,” now rumoured to have been found. General Conservator and State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Piotr Żuchowski cautions against it, warning that whoever finds the train might end up paying with their lives. Far from being protected by any curses, the legendary train is rumoured to have been filled not only with treasures but also with explosives. The story has it that the Nazis used the train to move large quantities of gold from Wrocław, but ultimately left the train concealed inside a railway tunnel, purposely blowing up and masking the entrance. Various documents and witness accounts supposedly point to the treasure being hidden in the vicinity of Wałbrzych, somewhere along the railway connecting the two cities. Recently, two men came forward claiming that they had found the treasure. On 26 August, the authorities in Wałbrzych confirmed that the train had been located in the area, which resulted in a number of treasure hunters equipped with metal detectors rushing to the city, apparently counting on getting their hands on the treasure before the authorities decide on how to proceed.

Opportunities on Real Estate Market

Capital Boom

Capital Boom

According to a report prepared by real estate agents Szybko.pl, Metrohouse and Expander, prices on the secondary real estate market in June in the 15 largest Polish cities dropped by 1.6% YOY. Compared to May, they grew by 0.1%. It is predicated that Poles can expect a boom on this market in the coming months. Marta Kosińska, a Szybko.pl real estate market expert, believes that it will be caused the typical increased activity of realty buyers and renters during the autumn, as well as changes in regulations and more MdMs (Apartments for Young Adults). In almost all cities in which markets have been analysed (except Wrocław), average transaction prices dropped slightly when compared to the previous month’s prices. The most significant fall in prices has been observed in Gdynia and Gdańsk. The most noticeable difference between offered prices and transaction prices was observed in Krakow (a difference of 8%), whereas in Warsaw, offered prices are 2% higher than the prices at which the properties are eventually bought.

Polish Apartments Too Expensive

Luxury Apartments

Luxury Apartments

Owners of expensive apartments are attempting to sell them for much more than their actual market value and having problems finding buyers and are thus having to lower their expectations. City districts with the most expensive apartments on offer are not always the districts where the most expensive transactions are undertaken because the most expensive and luxurious apartments are not always displayed on regular property portals. “According to our data, this indicates that the locations with the most expensive flats and the most expensive transactions do not coincide. In fact, they only coincide 50% of the time,” says Mariusz Kurzac, CEO of Cenatorium. According to Morizon.pl and Cenatorium, the most reasonable prices of real estate are in Wrocław. The huge differences in most Polish towns and cities indicate a lack of professionalism in most real estate agencies which do not provide advice but blindly fulfil the orders of vendors. As a result, overly-priced apartments are left unsold for a long time. “The exception is Wrocław which in this respect is closer to Western European standards than other Polish cities,” claims Mariusz Kurzac.

Amazon Expands

The global mail-order giant, Amazon, officially opened its first two logistics centres in Bielany in Wrocław on Tuesday. It is the perfect place for servicing all parts of the continent,” said Collins. He stressed that the second argument to invest in Poland was the possibility of employing workers with great skills. Deputy Minister of Economy, Ilona Antoniszyn-Klik emphasised the enormous impetus of the investment. “Amazon has shown its effectiveness. Nobody believed that they could successfully build the centres at such a fast pace. It indicates the great potential of the company. Congratulations,” said the deputy minister.

Manatee in Poland

An ‘Africanarium’ with more than one hundred species of land animals as well as sixty species of coral reef fish has opened in Wrocław Zoo. The zoo now has penguins, crocodiles, hippopotami and manatees. The construction of the ‘Africanarium’ cost PLN 220 million and took two years to build. It is a three-storey building that occupies an area of 1.5 ha. It contains seven large pools filled with 15 million litres of water. The flora and fauna of the African waters are represented in the 170 m long and 70 m wide pavilion. One can also admire different monkey and bird species at the ‘Africanarium’. Separate parts of the pavilion are divided geographically and represent different parts of Africa. Wrocław Zoo was founded in the middle of the 19th century. It is not just the oldest in Poland, it is also the largest. Approximately 600,000 people visit the zoo annually. Marilyn Monroe in Wrocław

Marilyn

Marilyn

A collection of 3,000 photographs of Marilyn Monroe taken by one of the best-known fashion and film star photographers, Milton H. Greene, was put up for auction by DESA Unicum. The unique collection, which belonged to the Foreign Debt Service Fund since the mid-90s, was bought by Wrocław-based Hala Ludowa for PLN 6.4 million, making it the biggest one-off transaction on the Polish art market ever. The head of the company Andrzej Baworowski said that the collection is worth approximately PLN 18-24 million. The collection features many well-known photographs and also many never seen by the public before. A new museum will be created in Wrocław especially for the collection, which also contains approximately 100 photographs of Marlene Dietrich. The mayor of Wrocław explained that the purchase is an investment and also that Wrocław hopes to win the Melina Mercouri prize (PLN 1.5 million) for the European Capital of Culture. He has assured Wrocław residents that he has already started looking for private sponsors who will support the undertaking. The mayor was in favour of the purchase because he believes that apart from the Racławice Panorama and the original “Pan Tadeusz” by Adam Mickiewicz (Poland’s national bard), Wrocław can profit from another new international attraction. However, many believe that the investment is a “costly whim” and they doubt if it will changes the cultural line of the city.
