Warsaw Reconstructed

The grand opening devoted to the 50th anniversary of the post-war reconstruction of Warsaw’s Royal Castle took place at the end of January 2021. On 17 September 1939 at 11:15 the Castle clock stopped as armed forces of Nazi Germany started bombarding the area. The Castle was completely destroyed by German troops in September 1944. Long after the end of the WWII, communist authorities delayed reconstruction work on the Royal Castle.

The first meeting of the National Committee for the Restoration of Warsaw Royal Castle took place on 26 January 1971.  Two months later PLN 27 million had been collected. In appreciation of the massive reconstruction work that took place, Warsaw’s Old Town and Royal Castle were inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The anniversary will include four exhibitions in 2021: Vatican Masterpieces. An Exhibition on the 100th anniversary of the Birth of Pope John Paul II; The Polish Elite and the Fall of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. On the 230th anniversary of the declaration of the Constitution of 3 May; Holland in the Times of Rembrandt; Caravaggio and other Artists.
